The importance of nutrition while treating Leukemia

Facing something as rough as blood cancer, leukemia or lymphoma often leads to letting aside the proper nutrition one should follow. Truth is that nutrition is very important to help the patient feel better and of course to build a strong immune system throughout and after their cancer treatment.

According to most nutritionists, having a big variety of foods is the best way to strengthen your immune system aka the cells and proteins that defend the body against infection. It is no secret that eating properly also helps the body give birth to new blood cells and tissues destroyed by treatment.

A proper nutrition for every individual usually consists of:

–        Variety of fruits and vegetables

–        Whole grains

–        Fat free or low-fat dairy

–        Low fat proteins such as poultry or lean meat

–        Healthy oils like olive oil

It is important to note that nutrition advices vary from patient to patient. Individuals who have just had a transplant or intense chemotherapy for example may need to avoid certain types of food.

One of the most important things to do when following a healthy lifestyle is to immediate reduce sugar and salt. In numbers, this means that you need to eat less than 10% of calories per day from added sugars and less than 2,300 mg of sodium (salt) per day.

healthy nutrition, in order to become successful and being an actual help to the patient, should always be completed by

–        A healthy body weight

–        Drinking enough fluids (8-10 glasses daily)

–        Exercise as much as possible

–        Keeping calm and avoiding stress

–        Sleeping adequately  (7-9 hours per night for adults)

–        Not smoking

–        Not drinking

Cancer treatment side effects are an often phenomenon that cannot be avoided. Side effects can cause many things, but one way to help your body to feel better is to stay hydrated and to exercise, as mentioned above. Hydration is key in situations like these, but tea can help too. Avoid fluids containing sugar and coffee if it causes you gastric or reflux symptoms. Light exercise, upon discussion with the patient’s doctor, should also be considered as a correct way to help your body remain toned and strengthen while going through cancer treatment.

It is important to note that food cannot treat cancer, but it can be a very helpful asset to a patient’s body and system. Following healthy eating habits and making a routine out of them is always beneficial for everyone. Friends and family of the patient should encourage their loved one in treatment by adopting a healthy nutrition lifestyle as well.
